Collaboration
Larry’s Leadership Launch
I recently observed a group of people who were working through a very difficult situation. The room was tense with different views and strong opinions on how to move forward. I watched as the group began discussing what should be done. What struck me the most was not whose opinion was right or wrong, but how those opinions were being shared. One individual spoke with defensiveness and anger and immediately the tension in the group rose. Listening to one another became harder with little or no progress being made.
Finally, another person spoke words that encouraged the group to come together in order to move forward. This person acknowledged that there would not be complete agreement around the issue but that there could be mutual respect, and thus a path forward. The mood in the room changed again, this time to a more collaborative environment. The problem is not solved, but the group is committed to keep talking and to ultimately find a way to improve the situation.
We often underestimate the power of words in our relationships. Words can ignite a fire that destroys or build one that brings warmth and comfort. Our words have the power to hurt or encourage those we care about the most. Understanding the power of words is essential to a healthy and growing relationship.

The third pillar and fundamental competency in the Areté Way is Collaboration. For leaders, it's about shared responsibility, open communication, and motivating teams toward a collective effort. It is more than just cooperation; it embodies a unified approach where communication, shared goals, and teamwork come together to produce exceptional results.
Leaders who dedicate themselves to fostering a collaborative work environment can unleash the full potential of their teams, setting the organization on a path of enduring growth. By following this example and promoting meaningful discussions, you will build connections across departments, dismantle silos, and create pathways for group decision-making. This approach strengthens relationships and creates an environment where ideas flourish, perspectives are valued, and outcomes benefit from diverse contributions. Inspiring your teams with this collective spirit demonstrates that when one succeeds, all succeed.
For Supervisors, collaboration at Areté is about encouraging teamwork during daily operations. By leading by example, you can inspire your team to work cohesively, share ideas, and support one another. Your adaptability and focus on inclusivity ensure that each team member feels heard and contributes meaningfully to achieving shared objectives.
