Courage
Larry’s Leadership Lineup
As I talk with leaders from diverse backgrounds and opinions, there are two things on which everyone can agree. Now more than ever, we need wisdom and courage.
As leaders, it is vital that we do not allow our emotions to diminish our wisdom and courage. Wisdom brings the ability to know when to speak up, or when to keep quiet. Courage brings the choice to overcome fear and act or to have the strength to step back when necessary. I’m not sure which is the hardest: speaking up and taking action or stepping back and using discipline. There is a time for both.
It starts with those we lead and love. Maybe we need to take the time to truly hear those around us. Maybe we need to exercise the wisdom that will allow us to align our behavior with our values.
We need leaders who are not afraid to listen. We need men and women who are willing to lead with their behavior and not just their words.
Choose to lead with wisdom and courage and you will make a difference.

Courage is a core value of the Decatur Police Department and is essential to ethical and effective policing. Officers show courage by acting with integrity, staying committed to their oath, taking risks when necessary, demonstrating resilience in adversity, and leading with accountability.
Taking risks is a natural part of the job. It means speaking up when something is wrong, adapting to new challenges, making tough decisions, and stepping into leadership when needed. Courageous officers do not wait for the perfect moment. They take action when it matters, knowing that progress and growth come from facing challenges head-on.
Resilience is essential to courage. It is the ability to stay focused and effective under pressure. Officers who develop resilience adapt to challenges, learn from setbacks, and continue to serve with integrity. They see obstacles not as barriers, but as opportunities to improve and grow.
“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”
At the Decatur Police Department, courage is about more than physical bravery. It is about doing what is right, even when it is difficult or unpopular. Officers who embrace this value strengthen their department, build trust with the community, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
Let’s get started with Taking Risks. Growth and progress don’t happen by standing still, so let’s step forward.
