Fairness
Larry’s Leadership Lineup
We live in a culture where everyone is concerned with their “rights” and getting what they feel they deserve. While ensuring our personal rights and freedoms is a good thing, many times we forget the important truth that with rights come responsibilities—and often those responsibilities are to others. One of the most important responsibilities we have to those around us is to create an environment of trust and acceptance in our homes as well as at work. Relationships that are successful are rooted in an environment that yields safety and growth.
Are we listening to those who do not agree with our opinion or preferences? Do we see feedback as a gift, even when it is not positive? Is respect a foundation of our interactions with those around us? Are we quick to forgive and slow to judge others? Do we give second chances and allow others to learn from their failures? Do we care about the person more than the issue?
Creating an impactful and effective relationship begins with the type of environment that we are fostering. Focusing only on what we deserve will yield frustration, defensiveness and anger. Intentionally focusing on our responsibilities to those around us will foster a culture of trust and respect, and build a long-lasting and meaningful legacy.
When we choose to create an environment built on respect and kindness toward others, we most certainly will make a difference.

Fairness is more than just treating people equally. It is about ensuring that every individual within The Decatur Police Department is valued, heard, and respected. In law enforcement, fairness means upholding integrity in every decision, maintaining consistency in our actions, and treating colleagues and community members with dignity. At its core, fairness is built on respect—respect for oneself, for fellow department members, and for those we serve. Without respect, fairness becomes an empty promise rather than a guiding principle.
Everyday moments often reveal fairness in ways we do not always recognize. It is making sure everyone on a shift has the same opportunity to speak during a briefing. It is stepping in when a colleague is overwhelmed to share the workload. It is acknowledging the perspectives of both a rookie and a veteran officer during a discussion. Fairness is not about giving everyone the same outcome but ensuring everyone is given the same level of respect, opportunity, and consideration.
“Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you.”
Within the DPD, fairness fosters professionalism and trust. When department members treat each other with respect, regardless of role or background, the entire organization grows stronger. Fairness means recognizing contributions, holding ourselves and others accountable, and ensuring every voice is heard. Just as we respect others, self-respect is essential. Carrying ourselves with integrity and confidence reinforces our ability to lead with fairness.
Fairness and respect go hand in hand. A department that values fairness creates a culture where respect is the standard, not the exception. In the next module, we will focus on respect, how it strengthens collaboration, and why it is essential for both professional and personal growth.
