Respect
We can learn all the best practice principles, tools, content, and ideas, but if we do not practically apply them to our lives, then they are of no real value. I believe that one of the most relevant components of our leadership journey is respect. It sits at the core of servant leadership which is extremely relevant to successful leaders. Demonstrating respect is a choice that defines our character and quality as a person.

A little respect goes a long way.
Demonstrating respect in your daily interactions is one of the most impactful actions you can take as a member of the Decatur Police Department. Respect strengthens trust, enhances collaboration, and reinforces engagement across the department and within the community. It builds strong internal relationships, promotes accountability, and ensures that we serve with professionalism and integrity. When respect is a priority, every individual feels valued, heard, and supported, creating a workplace where both officers and civilian staff can thrive.
“Don’t ever forget that you’re a citizen of this world, and there are things you can do to lift the human spirit, things that are easy, things that are free, things that you can do every day: civility, respect, kindness, character.”
The DPD Way Respect Module is designed to provide you with essential tools to cultivate and maintain respect within the department. Respect goes beyond politeness—it is the foundation of effective communication, cohesive department dynamics, and a strong workplace culture. As a leader, the way you communicate, listen, and engage directly impacts trust, morale, and teamwork within the department.
Throughout this module, you will explore key principles of respect in law enforcement, reflect on your leadership approach, and develop strategies to create an environment where every individual feels valued. You will also examine how respect influences decision-making, conflict resolution, and department operations, strengthening your ability to lead with integrity and professionalism.
Respectful leadership is not just about what you say—it’s about how you make others feel. By applying the skills in this module, you will enhance your ability to inspire, motivate, and contribute to a positive department culture that drives both individual and organizational success.
